Why be a member of the local Chamber of Business and Tourism?

From time to time any responsible business owners want to review the costs and benefits of membership of their local chamber of business. We would like to take a moment of your time to put some facts and observations before you to help you in such an evaluation, whether you are an existing or potential member.

The model we have developed for the Chamber combines business and tourism, believing that for business to be successful in this area, tourism must be successfully managed in such a way as to promote a sustainable local economy. Kenton-on-Sea and Bushmans River Mouth, and their suburbs, are more than just geographical entities. It is our view that business and tourism are activities that can contribute to integration and co-operation among all residents, and thus help grow a concept of ‘one village’ where in the context of economic growth and stability peace and harmony prevail.

We have run the Tourism/Information office since its inception some decades ago, and our window to the world of e-business is our increasingly busy and attractive web-site (with currently 250 000 hits per month mainly from South Africa but also 56 other countries), on which all members can participate.

Tourism: We are the business community’s conduit to the wider business of tourism development through our membership of and participation in the Sunshine Coast Tourism and Events Authority. This in turn is Ndlambe Municipality’s partner in local tourism development, with links to Cacadu District Municipality and the government department of East Cape Tourism, and opportunities of funding to promote Route 72.

Business: The local municipality system in South Africa provides for Ward Committees to participate in the governance of local communities. This includes any matters pertaining to business and tourism. Representatives of the Chamber’s Executive serve on the appropriate Ward Committees. They contribute to the governance process and keep a watching brief over relevant matters. Membership gives you direct and combined access to the process.

Other local organisations: We ensure co-ordination and co-operation with other local organisations such as KOSRA and BRRAG (ratepayers), Coastal Care, B&B Association, and Safety and Security through cross-representation and working together on common projects.

We have produced a pamphlet summarising our activities and recent achievements, which may also help you gain a more in-depth appreciation and understanding of who we are and of the case for your membership.

We need you: indeed we are you. We trust you will think you need us.

Yours sincerely

Mike Kirby
President
